The magnificent Bald Eagle is perhaps
most famous as the national emblem of
the USA. Populations became dangerously
low in the mid 20th Century, but have
recovered following government protection
of their habitats. Ranging across much of
the North American continent, this large
sea eagle is found near large bodies of
open water with an abundant food supply
and old-growth trees for nesting. Weighing
upto 7kg the adult Bald Eagle has a brown
body with a white head and tail, bright
yellow eyes, large taloned feet and a
powerful hooked beak. Juveniles are
completely brown except for the yellow
feet. Males & females have identical
plumage. Bald Eagles build the largest
nest of any bird in North Amercia. A pair
will produce 1 -3 eggs per year that are
incubated for about 35 days and the chicks
fledge at between 10 to 14 weeks old.
