The Little Owl is the smallest owl
resident in Britain. It is common
across much of Europe and was
introduced to the UK in the 19th
century. Little Owls are most active at
dawn and dusk but are commonly seen
during daylight, often perching on a tree
branch, telegraph pole or rock. Adults
weigh upto 175g. The plumage on their
back and wings are a deep grey-brown,
spotted with white. The underside is
white with broad, broken streaks of
grey-brown. The face is marked by
dark areas around the yellow eyes.
They nest in tree holes, walls of old
buildings, rabbit burrows and cliff holes.
The female lays 3-5 eggs in early May
and incubates the eggs for 29 days.
