The Lugger (or Laggar) Falcon is
resident on the Indian sub-continent
where it replaces the Saker and Lanner
as the predominant falcon. It inhabits
cultivated plains with trees and open
country, not usually mountainous areas,
but sometimes upto 1,000m. It does not
avoid human habitations and will sometimes
breed in towns. In it's general habits it is
similar to the Lanner Falcon. While it is not
as accomplished a flyer as the Peregrine,
the Lugger is still as efficient as any falcon
and is known for it's hunting tenacity.
The plumage is grey brown on the wings,
back and tail with a pale or white chest and
dark 'teardrops' descending from the eyes.
It makes it's nest on rocky crags, ledges on
buildings, or abandoned nests of other birds
in trees. 2 - 5 eggs are laid and are incubated
by both parents but mainly the female for
upto 40 days.
