The Tawny Eagle is a large eagle
of the genus Aquila that includes
the Golden Eagle, Steppe Eagle
and Wedge-Tailed Eagle. Tawny
Eagles are found across much of
sub-saharan Africa and also on the
Indian sub-continent. Plumage can
vary from light to dark morphs.
The adult has tawny upperparts and
blackish flight feathers and tail, with
a pale lower back. Immature birds
are less contrasted than adults.
It scavenges mainly fresh carrion
and is also known to take kills from
other birds of prey. It will pursue and
rob a wide range of birds upto the
large and formidable Martial Eagle.
Tawny Eagles build their nests in trees
and also on the ground or on rocks or
crags. They lay 1 - 3 eggs
that are incubated for around 45 days.
